Your travel luggage is one of the most essential things that you need when traveling. Investing on a durable and high-quality travel bag is a wise decision. However, you have to know how to take good care of your bag. You would want to prolong its life.
Maintaining your travel luggage is fairly easy. You can try the following tips:
1. Regularly clean it by vacuuming its interior and exterior.
Use a small vacuum cleaner and clean the exterior and the interior of your luggage. Make sure you get rid of accumulated dust particles. This should be done at least once a month to keep it in top shape. Black canvas bags tend to turn grey because of dust particles.
2. Do not store your bag in a very humid and moist environment.
Avoid placing your travel luggage in a big plastic bag. You should store it in a breathable cotton bag, preferably the ones used to store shoes. This will allow air to circulate inside and to prevent the fabric of your bag from turning dingy. It will also help air out leather luggage. Leather tends to deteriorate faster when it is cooped up in closed spaces for a prolonged period of time.
3. Protect your bag from pests like rodents, ants and cockroaches.
Many people do not know that ants can chew flimsy fabrics and can easily put a hole on the fabric of clothes and travel bags. This is why cleaning should be done regularly especially in the area where you keep your travel bags. You can also try using moth balls to ward off insects and pests.
4. Use an anti-rust spray for the metal parts of your luggage.
The handle, the bearings and the screws of the bag can turn rusty if they are exposed to moisture and oxygen. Even stainless steel can turn rusty if they are made from low-grade stainless steel. To prevent this from happening, spray on an anti-rust spray on the metal parts of your bag. Also wipe away excess moisture immediately.
5. Sprinkle baking soda if you want to get rid of the odor.
If your bag has been cooped up inside the storage area for a prolonged period of time, it can smell bad. Try sprinkling baking soda all over the bag and leave it there overnight. Vacuum the baking soda off the next morning. This will work in diffusing the odor of the luggage.
